Doing Activities for Kids: Taking Part in My Kid’s Homework
I’ve always looked towards the end of the day when I get some quick time away from the computer to help with my kid’s activities. I had always made sure that I get to free up my early evening time to help her with school work when the clock strikes at 6 PM. That’s when I need to pull her from playing with her new Indian kid playmate next door so that she could start doing all the homework and review all the lessons she learned during the day.

I remember the days when she was still too excited to get her first step in school. She would even get her small bag and put in a pencil and some pieces of paper. She likes to experience those activities for kids that she keeps on seeing on TV.
Now she has grown quite tired to dressing up and going to school everyday, so she finds school more of a chore. The only exciting time for her is at the beginning of the school year in June – the time when she gets to have those brand new school supplies, fresh set of uniforms and squeaky clean pair of shoes.
She ends up to be an above average performer when I get to help her review lessons in school. Her strongest subject is Math, and she must have taken that ability from me, as that is also my best performing subject. Subjects that use the Filipino language are her difficult subjects – she learned to speak English more than those Filipino words. She was performing poorly at first half of the school year, but she is now catching up.

Now this saves me from those expensive fees that quality tutorial centers offer. I think those tutorial centers are in it for the business of making money: most Filipino families are now going away from the traditional lifestyle where the mom takes care of the home while dad is at work. Those tutorial centers offer activities for kids that result to kids developing an edge in social skills over their peers. But parents should not depend too much on day care centers because a neglectful parent might raise a child with behavioral problems.
Getting hands on with my kid is something that I look forward to each end of the day. That’s the sheer advantage of being a work-at-home mom with a flexible time schedule. It is the time of the day where I get to bond with my kid and know her victories and struggles in school. I love the feeling of being the catalyst in helping her get her interest back in doing the day’s school work.
